EVALUATION QUESTION 4

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Okay so after months of hard work we finally got to watch our music videos at The screen on the green cinema in Islington, Angel. It was an exciting few hours and enabled us to experience how an audience reaction would be straight after watching our videos.
While in the production stages of my music video we often asked for feedback in order for us to improve throught. Common comments that usually repeated itself were things like
  • Good use of different types of shots
  • The rapid faces edit was really good
  • Nice use of locations in Bricklane
  • The artist fits the genre of the song that we decided to use
This is a video captured from the viewing at the cinema back in December. The audience reaction seemed rather positive and while watching many did say they enjoyed it.

There are a few changes that people said we should think about if we were to film this music video again.
  • Our artist needs to add a bit more movement
  • More high angle shots would work well in certain parts of the video

Through comments such as those i have learnt what is important in a music video and it can really determine the success your video ends up having. It is important for your Artist to look at the camera alot and not to be so detached away from the camera such as looking away, feeling uncomfortable, hands in their pocket etc. However with our music video our Artist was supposed to feel slightly 'depressed' and we wanted him to illustrate this through lack of movement and staring blankly at the camera at times.

Videos such as Example-Midnight Run show how the artist has good eye contact with the camera and looks as if he is singing to his audience which makes the audience then feel more interaction.

This is a video of me briefly talking about audience feedback and how it is very helpful.

Some audience feedback from a few of my facebook friends.
A few people 'liked' the image of my digipak that i uploaded so i presumed that they thought it was good so here's a screen shot.

Audience feedback for video

From Shani's audience feedback i learnt that our music video was successful in many ways. She discussed how she thought we had a great use of high, low and mid shots as well as many close ups. I thought this was a nice piece of feedback to receive and i learnt that through this we were able to let our audience identify with the artist as they were able to see his face as well as his posture (mid shots). She also liked the use of the faces edit where she said it was exactly on point with the beat of the song. This helped reiterate my skills of final cut pro and reinforced that i have been able to learn different techniques and editing skills. I think one thing i would change about   our video product is that maybe we could have put a shot of our artist between the shots of girls for example (girl, artist, girl, artist) etc this would then show a strong link as to why we decided to use that idea.  Shani also commented on the use of the REC edit and liked the use of black and white shots which showed a contrast between the rest of the colour footage.

From Prince's audience feedback i learnt that our music video was successful in many ways. He discussed how we used a variety of shows and there was a good range. He really liked the fact that the artist changed outfits a few times and his style contrasted well with the genre of music. (dubstep). He also touched upon lip syncing and how it was quite successful in the sense that the artist performed it well and it looked as if it was really his song, this reinforces Prince's comment about the artist looking 'serious.' I learnt from this piece of feedback that we did capture alot if different shot types, i do agree with him to this extent as i think we worked hard to ensure that we included many different camera angles as possible to show a good variety. In addition to that i think next time we would do with a slipping a few more scenery shots in because at times one of two shots were shown quite a few times during the music video and a bit more footage of the actual location down Bricklane would have been nice. Although Prince had lots of good things to say he also discussed one negative which was that at times the camera was a bit shaky. In many ways we wanted to convey this because our artist was suppose to feel 'confused' and 'uneasy' during the video and we thought adding elements of filming free hand (without tripod) would help was portray this message.

From Adam's a feedback it highlighted some of the decisions we took when figuring our how we wanted to film and plan our music video. He commented on the use of locations and how it reflected the type of artist we had in our music video, he also liked the sight of imagery such as the graffiti backgrounds and bright colours. The fact that there was a good edit on the 'faces' part of our music video was mentioned again and he thought we did a good job editing it so it matched the beat of the song. This idea reinforces Caro Vernallis theory of editing that seems to have a rhythmic basis closely connected to the song. One negative comment that Adam said was that our the artist performance was rather lazy, and didn't put in enough effort. However, that was what we were hoping for, not exactly wanting our artist to look lazy but we wanted him to seem depressed and sad because of the lyrics of the song. I do understand how his attitude my come across as showing limited effort but we had a reason behind this. This taught me that maybe we could have used different ideas to illustrate this idea like, a shot of him walking down a long dark road with his back to the camera, connoting feeling lonely.

Audience feedback on ancillary products

From Shannon's audience feedback about my ancillary products was quite positive. He mentioned that i had a good colour scheme and it was consistent throughout which was what i intended to do. He also felt my design worked well and the photograph on digipak cover was a good shot. However i feel that if i were to do this product again i would use a different image probably a close up or mid close up. This is because the genre of my music 'dubstep' in a way suggest an 'in your face' attitude as the music is upbeat, lively and urban. I think that maybe it would contrast my genre better but i feel that the image i did use is effective as it shows the laid back characteristic's of my artist as he 'seems chilled' sitting on the chair with his hands together. Shannon also commented on the fact that my digipak was 'visually friendly' as it looked like it had an urban edge to it and the contrast between light and dark colours looked good. This was something i wanted to show as creating colourful products were typical of the dubstep genre. A few  negatives comments did arise such as that the typography of the song titles may be a bit difficult to read and maybe a clearer font could have been used. He also touched upon some of the conventions of an advert which i successfully achieved which was 'promoting' my artist and he added that it looked professional.

From Jermoe's  feedback i learnt that my ancillary products was a good variety of bright colours. He too also mentioned that a closer shot of the artist should have been used on the front panel because we are suppose to be promoting a new upcoming artist. He also spoke briefly about my music video and how he felt that we took the time out to edit very well. The way the faces of the girls changed on every beat of the song was really good. I feel that this has taught me that the skills we had previously learnt paid off because we were able to produce a music video with an element that nobody else doing this project had done. Two or three groups had aspects of faces changing throughout their videos but ours was deliberately matching the beat of the song to create excitement, adrenaline and create a 'wow' factor.

Hmmm she was camera shy so it is only 8 seconds long, ha. But Brenda's feedback touched upon the attire of the artist and she felt that his casual look really did work well with the song choice and location. She described him as 'funky.' We were inspired by many artist as well as our actual target audience as we realised that alot of people that do listen to dubstep songs dressed in a very similar way to our artist and we felt that we didn't over do his outfit nor did we put little effort into it.
