EVALUATION QUESTION 4

Audience Reaction

When I asked for feedback from the people in the class these are some of the things they said;

• The changing of faces sequence was excellent as it changed at every beat of the chorus.
• The graffiti backgrounds used were very good as it linked in to the dubstep genre of the song.
• The Artist's image also linked into the dubstep theme.
• The use of different varies of shot types.

There are also some things they said that could be improved on such as;

• Artist being more energetic, moving around, maybe even dance. 
• More eye contact with the camera needed. 
• A change in location, maybe go into a club, where its dark but there are flashing lights.
• Better effects could be used.

Overall it was a very good effort as this was our first time producing a music video. 

After the music video was shown at the cinema, the audience started clapping and cheering. 

EVALUATION QUESTION 3

This is the video camera we used when recording our music video, it was quite easy to use since I had experience using it when making my thriller video in AS Media Studies.
When using the camera, I had to make sure that both memory cards where put in, that it was on manual focus and not auto.
We had to put a light on when it was dark as the video camera did not have an in-built light source.

                                   We also used a mini speaker which was connected to blackberry to play the music "You Shot Yourself in the Foot Again" out loud, so our artist could lip sing to the song.

I used blogger to research, plan and do my evaluation (which I am doing now) to make the music video and produce the ancillary products ( digipak and advertisement ). 

I used the internet to do my research about the original music video, the artists, the digipaks, how to use final cut pro and photoshop elements to produce better work.

Here is our animatic, this is the initial thought of what we was going to do in the music video, but as we progressed we got better ideas and implemented them into our video.

I feel as though my digipak and advertisement make a clear visual link between it and the music video. The things that do this are;

• On the advertisement, it introduces the single "You Shot Yourself in the Foot Again" which is the song used in the music video.
• I used graffiti fonts to relate to the dubstep genre of the song. 
• The colours I used are kind of dark and basic to also link into the theme of the dubstep genre.
• The images used of the artist kind of relate to the artist in the video being lonely and reminiscing about his ex-girlfriend.
• The clothes that the artist wears creates a sort of image of what a dubstep fan would look like.

EVALUATION QUESTION 1

These are some of the videos that influenced us when making our music video;

The original video - Skream ft Example - You Shot Yourself in the Foot Again. The things that influenced us in this video were;

• The way the video cuts to each beat in the chorus, in the same way we used this technique when we introduced the girls into the video and it cut at each beat. 
• The storyline of it, where the boy is cheating on his girlfriend. 

Example - Kickstarts - The editing and storyline was the main things that influenced us in this video, such as;

• The way there are clips of girls changing at each beat. 
• The storyline where a boy is going out with different multicultural girls.

Nero - Crush on you - In this video the main theme that influenced us was again the fact that the boy was going out with many different multicultural girls. 

The main themes that we used for our music video were;

• Multicultural ethnicities. 
• Relationships - the fact that the boy is cheating on his girlfriend with many other girls.

For the digipak that I created, I looked at the main artist's digipaks (Skream and Example) and tried to follow the theme that they use but at the same time make it look as a dubstep album.

I tried to use the same layout as they did where they had an image of their artist on the front cover, with the artist's name and the album name.

As you can see, I followed the basic structure of including the artists image, artists name and album name. But in mine the fonts I used make it look like a dubstep genre. 

Here is the back cover of Example's album "Playing in the shadows".

Mine is quite different to his, as his is kind of plain. Here is an image of mine.

On mine, these are the things I included;

• I used more colour.
• The layout is different.
• I also included another image of the artist on the back cover. 
• I included websites for the artist and the recording company.
• I put in the copyright clearance. 
• The fonts I used make it look like a dubstep genre. 

I could not find the inside cover for either of the artists albums, so I decided to stick to the same theme and layout.

In the inside cover these are the things I included;

• I included the artists image on both sides, but this time I added a filter to it.
• I changed the way I laid out the album name, I made it go up horizontally. 
• Instead of adding a thank you paragraph, I just left a thank you phrase at the top.
• I included the lyrics of the hit single "You Shot Yourself in the Foot Again".

Changing the digipak's colour scheme

Here is my outside cover, inside cover and my advertisement. I changed the colours to make it stick to the colours that my group is using.

This is my inside cover of the digipak, I included the basic things to make it such as;

• The CD placement. 
• The Artists name.
• The Album name.
• Images of the artist.

I also decided to add the lyrics of the main single on the album on one side of the cover.

This is my mockup of the advertisement. I tried to keep the same layout as I did for the digipak such as;

• The font type.
• The colours.
• The artist name.
• The album name.

I also added another image of our Artist face on, looking at the camera with an effect on it.

Editing my digipak to stick with the groups choice

Since we had to stick to a group layout, we had to decide on what things we would keep the same.

We chose to keep the;

• The Album name the same. 
• The Tracklist the same. 
• The Artist name the same.

Taking that in mind, as you can see by the image above. I have changed the album name to what the group decided to put and I have also changed the tracklist, I also had to change the font of my tracklist because there are many more songs in this one, so I had to make the font more readable, as the other one looked squashed.

Group 16 Digipak ideas

These are our final ideas of the information that needs to be on our digipak. Our layouts will be different as well as style and image use but these are the information that needs to be kept the same throughout the product of advertising and digipak work.

Mock-up digipak

This is a mock-up digipak that I have made to get a sense of how I would do it when doing the real thing. 
I think that I did a pretty good job on making it, as photoshop can be frustrating to use at times. 
I included the basic things which make it a digipak such as;

• Artist's name.
• Album name.
• Spine, including; artist's name, album name, production company, album number.
• Tracklist.
• Copyright information.
• Website for artist and record company.
• Where to buy the album from.
• Barcode.

Things I think that I did good: 

• The fonts chosen go well with the genre, being dubstep, I chose the fonts to be like graffiti. 
• Adding the images into it. 
• Sticked to a specific colour scheme.
• Used a fixed number of fonts.

Things I could have improved on:

• Have a better background.
• Include more images.
• Use the space more efficiently.
• Make the image of him on the front cover bigger.

Idea basis! 

Analysis of previous student's digipak

I chose to analyse this student's digipak as it looks very professional and well laid out.
On the front cover is an image of the Artist with his name, album title and parental advisory logo. They chose to stick with a grey colour scheme, although this is basic it is very consistent so it is doesn't look very messy with lots of different colours.
On the spine it has the artist name, album title, record number.
On the back cover, again it has the artist name and album name. It has the tracklist, barcode, copyright information, various logos of companies.
On the inside it has the tracklist again and various information about the album such as; produced by, lyrics written by, musicians, thanks, photos and the artists website.
On the other side of the inside it has where the cd will go.
Also I like the graphic they used where there is a stream of wavy lines going across the covers.

Things I liked:

• Consistant colour throughout. 
• The image used for the front cover links in to the album name. 
• The design that they used which goes across both inside and outside covers.
• Only one font used throughout. 

Things they could change:

• I don't think they should have included the tracklist again on the inside. 

Practising making a Digipak

This is the digipak that I have individually created within a lesson. It is not great, but it is not awful either. There are some decent things that I have included and some things that I can improve on when I am going to make a digipak for our Music Video.

I included the basic things to make it a digipak such as:

• Having the artists image on the front cover.
• The artist's name and album title on the front.
• Artist's name, album title, production company on the spine.
• A logo for the production company.
• Track list.
• Copyright logo.
• Copyright for the production company.
• Website of the production company.

Things that I did good: 

• Added a filter to the image on the front cover.
• Created a logo for the company although it was not the best. 
• Added a barcode.
• Added the copyright with the company's website.

Things that I could have improved on:

• Add more colour into it.
• Choose different fonts. 
• Add a background image to make it stand out. 
• Make a better logo or get a ready made one.

Production: Skills development: Editing skills

I was very keen on editing, I have an interest in it. Finding ways to make it look good, waiting on the outcome to see what how it would be and what other people would think about it.
So getting down to the editing, these are some of the skills I learnt.
Lip syncing:
 First we layed down all the base tracks that we had and then we had to match it up to the song so that it would be in sync. To do this we found the start of the lyrics of the song and when we found that we put a marker by pushing "M" on the keyboard, then we went to one of the base tracks and had to find the exact same point of the song and pushed "M" again to add another marker, after doing this we went onto the timeline and matched the markers up so they were in line. This is how we did the lip syncing.
Changing scenes:
To do this we would cut every base track to the beat. Then we would use the razor tool and hold down "Shift" and click on where we would want to cut it, by holding down shift it would cut every base track so we wouldn't have to do it one by one. Then to get the scene you wanted to show, it would be which ever one is on top, so if we wanted the second scene we would have to delete the first base track.
Changing faces:
For this we had to get lots of different girls to stand in the same spot for 5 seconds while we record them, after we did this we imported it onto Final Cut Pro and imported the song too. In our song there is a specific point where the beat drops at 41 seconds. We wanted each beat to be a girls face, so we had to cut the clips down to size and get it to match up with the beat, we didn't record enough girls so we had to use to same girls again to make up the rest of the beat as it lasted long. 
Slow motion: 
This was pretty simple, to do this we imported a clip, then clicked on it. We went to modify at the top, then change speed, then it says rate 100%, to make it go slower we had to lower the rate, we choose 40% and vice versa to speed it up you increase the rate. 
Black and White effect:
To do this we had to import a clip, click on it then go to effects, then video filters, image control and then desaturate. 

Production: Skills development: how I approached planning differently to AS

This year, the music video task was much harder than last year's thriller opening task. For the thriller opening we had a solid idea that we would stick with, after we knew the story we would be doing, we immediately came up with the location we would choose, the props we would use, the costumes that would be used and who would be starring in it. Once we had all of this we quickly picked up the pace and began filming straight away, we went to our location, set up the equipment and started filming, granted we wasn't that experienced in any of this, it was the first time doing any of this, the acting in front of the camera, getting all the right shots, making sure that everything was in frame. After our first day, we got back to college and started editing, we did find a few things that we needed to fix, so we went back and re-filmed it and everything was done, we just edited it and finished.
This year on the other hand I found it difficult, we had to pick out a song to use, we were struggling with that, after looking through many different songs, one of the people in our group (Joe) stumbled upon one (Skream ft Example - Shot Yourself in the Foot Again), everyone in the group listened to it and thought that it would be an excellent choice as it was a dubstep genre and would be different to everyone elses. Our group came up with several ideas on to what the music video would be about and we were struggling on picking out one. We had to send out emails to the artists to try and gain copyright permissions to use the song. We then came to a conlusion on what the story of the music video would be and we booked the equipment and began filming. This year we had gained experience so we knew how to use the equipment, how to set it up, how the frame the shot etc. After two days of filming we went back to college and started to edit, we were getting the hang of this as we had learnt how to do it before we had breaken up for summer holiday's.
Again we found little problems, we got feedback from the teachers and needed to go back and re-film, this happened again and we went back a second time to re-film. This time we were in luck and everything was all right, now editing needed to be done, we researched on which effects to use, looked at different music videos, looked at the original and how we would make it different to that.

Production: Feedback from teacher

Points our teachers (Tony & Dan) made about our rough cut:

• At 15 seconds Joe's feet are not in the shot as we wanted to film the background behind him so we faced the camera up a little. Tony said it looked unprofessional as it was only our second shot of the whole music video, Dan said it looked Ok and for us to keep it like that. But we wanted it to look perfect, so we went back to Brick Lane to re-film the shot and make sure that his feet were showing.
• At 33 seconds a car drove by while Joe was lip syncing and ruined the whole scene, so we decided to use another base track we filmed instead when we was going to correct it.
