EVALUATION QUESTION 3

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

The amount of media resources that were available to me during my research, planning and evaluation stages were really good.

  • Brand new state of the art video cameras which had 2 different slots for our groups memory cards. This was very easy to use but need a considerable amount of care.

We used this piece of  equipment to plan and carry out our music videos. We filmed short animations as well as the main product (music video). This video camera is very useful especially for the period in which we were using them for. During our filming stages it got rather dark at around 4pm and my group were sometimes our filming. As the darkness fell upon us the quality of our footage looked quite rubbish and unprofessional we were really getting stressed out as our deadline for filming was fast approaching. After ages of trying to look for some sort of solution we found a filter light on the camera and this created more light and our footage was so much better. Clearer, more precise and contrasted well with the night sky.

Memory card was very useful as this is were we stored all our footage from filming. It was important to keep it in one place so it was easy to access. The memory cards were also able to store a huge number of files such as pictures, videos and audio.

This is a video taken back in the filming stages of our production explaining our difficulties with lightening.

  • Blogger-Research, planning and evaluation
Used for part of our coursework assessments. I often referred to blogger as my online diary were i would write all my ideas and thoughts about the filming progress. Uploading influential videos that included ideas that i wanted to show in my music video. Pictures and screen grabs of programs such as Final Cut Pro, Voila, Photoshop etc. Blogger is also able to allow me to add a much more animated style to note taking such as embedding youtube videos, pictures, gifs, sound, slideshows etc which shows that it is open for all types of media platforms.

  • Internet for research purposes including Youtube, Background information on the Artist from our chosen song, websites like Myspace as they focus alot on independent artist and this was based around our ideas because etc. Websites were also very useful to research on because it gave me an insight into hour artist promote themselves and so gave me some ideas onto what to include on my advertisement, such as Twitter and Facebook accounts, producers, gigs, upcoming events etc. The internet was also very helpful in letting me gather quickly and efficiently.

EXAMPLES WEBSITE

Being able to embed a number of different videos to help with my research and planning stages was important to show comparisons and how i tried to develop ideas. Vimeo was a website which has lots of previous student work this was very helpful especially in the research and planning stages as it allowed us to analyse their music videos. Through this we were able to learn some of the strengths and weaknesses of their work, this opened our minds to rethinking or developing ideas that we had initial. This helped us so we didn't make the same mistakes as other students such as poor lighting, or badly famed shots.

  • Photoshop was used for the construction of my ancillary products.
This program was typically very useful and enabled me to create good products to go alongside my main product (video) I was able to add effects to images, download text and import it onto the program, crop images, using the quick selection tool i was able to delete/erase unnecessary backgrounds that i didn't need/want. For example as my digipak had a black base background colour. The image of my Artist was against an 'off black curtain' so the two types of black tones didn't look good together. I had to then use the quick selection tool and go around my image and then go to 'Select' then 'Inverse' this allowed me to separate my background from my image.

Tools/Panel

The image below is from the front cover of my album as you can see the Artist blends in well with my background so it adds a much more professional finish.

This is the orignal photo as you can see the background curtains do not look complete black due to the camera flash and lighting in the room. I also cropped the image so you can see a closer profile of the artist (above) and added an effect to make it seem edgy.

  • Apple Mac computers for editing, research, planning and evaluation

This was one of the most important pieces of technology that we had to use during out coursework.  The Apple Macs were used through the process of making our video and ancillary texts (digipak and advertisement). The up to date software was a bonus when it came to editing or designing our work because it gave us the opportunity to use really good programs such as Final Cut Pro for video making and Photoshop C5 to create a professional digipak. The Apple Macs were fast, efficient and enabled me to produce good pieces of work that I am very proud of.

  • Flip camera for filming

This is my animatic and digital storyboard. Filmed be using the Flip Cameras provided by the media department. This was an easy way to film a piece of footage and upload straight to the blog. The flip camera was also very useful for when we went out filming and we could record an update of how we were doing, and problems along the way and recording 'behind the scene' footage.

  • Digital cameras-for taking still images while out filming, photoshoot of artist

The digital camera enabled me to take images while on set during filming down in Bricklane. (Location for music video). It was also useful during the photoshoot we carried out for our artist and for our ancillary production.

    • Final cut pro- for editing and making our music videos

In this screen grab you can see how we used a 'REC' effect on some of our clips to illustrate the flash back our artist is having during the music video.
Final Cut Pro was a very very important program that we needed to use during our media coursework. This is what we used to put together all our clips in order to create our music videos. We were able to line up our base tracks (filmed footage), and our chosen song choice in a time line that looks like this...

    • Clip Grab- For converting music videos from youtube and being able to trim the clips to show specific parts of the music video.

    • iishow U- This allowed me to record the screen while i was working. I have shown skills of this in evaluation question 1 when i showed what i was doing on Final Cut pro and recorded the screen. This allows you to illustrate how you use a particular program

    • MPEG Streamclip-import video clips and trim them at certain parts that you really want to show instead of importing whole videos
