Research: Laura Mulvey's ideas on representation

"In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the famle figure which is styled accordingly." (Laura Mulvey, 1992)

My understanding of this would be that men like to stare upon women or check them out, a typical thing any man would do when they see an attractive women.

Some examples of this would be:

This video is a perfect example of this, where we see women walking around in bikini's and men's eyes gazing upon them projecting a "fantasy".

Some artists that would be able to challenge this idea would be:

Adele

Adele is very successful in the music business and this has nothing to do with Laura Mulvey's ideas of how women would potray themselve's to make others interested in them. Adele does not go around wearing clothes that would reveal parts of her body to be successful.

 Missy Elliot

This is a very good example as it shows Missy Elliot dressed up in not so average clothes, she covers up and wears clothes women would not normally wear, in this video she wears a type of fat suit to show that she does not care about her size and neither should other people. If they enjoy her music they should not care how she looks.
