Research for Music Video: What is the function of a music video?

A music video is a short film integrating a song as well as imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as marketing devices with the intention to promote the sale of music recordings. A music video can also be used to tell a story or to purely promote the artist. Below is an example of a music video by the artist, example;

Within this music video, you see a variety of different shots including; a close-up at 1.48 - this is done to show the artist and to also tell the story (a pair of friends go 'out on the town' and take ecstasy) - this close-up shows the effects the drugs are having on them.

Furthermore, Music videos use a wide range of styles of film making techniques, including animation, documentaries, live action filming, and non-narrative approaches such as abstract film.
Some music videos blend different styles, such as animation and live action (seen at 1.43 to show how the characters are hallucinating). Also, many music videos do not interpret images from the song's lyrics, making it less literal than expected (Disjuncture).
