Research For Music Video: What I have learned about the state of the Music Industry in 2012

Many aspects of the music industry have changed hugely over the last decade, this includes; sales of music products (CD's), ways in which people can produce music, the ways in which music is now distributed and also how music is exchanged between the people who own the music and the people who listen to it.

A while ago, all music would of been recorded within a professional recording studio with basic recording equipment, whereas now, people are able to record music within their own homes using their own personal computer and studio.

In addition, going back ten years ago, music was primarily distributed to the general public through Television adverts, radio stations and various magazine articles, however, now it is widely distributed through the internet as well as TV.
Phone devices/features such as bluetooth has also been a massive help in distribution, with millions of people sending music to each other everyday.

Ways of exchange has also changed greatly over the last decade, with people now downloading music for free via the internet in opposed  to purchasing CD's and records from music stores.

Second day of filming- Saturday 29th October

We loved filming this day, we got more work done than we thought. the weather was great :) (apart from the wind). We did more base tracks, and filmed more scenery. We went back to bricklane, the atmosphere was different because it was a Saturday, so there was more people around, however this made it more natural in filming our shots since we wanted a naturalistic setting to show that it wasn't a planned thing.

Here are the shots:

All filming was done in Brick Lane.

Setting the camera up on the tripod

Recording a base track with graffiti scenery in the background

Finding another location of where we are filming

Capturing some of the graffiti in Brick Lane

Setting up the camera for a different shot

In the park in Brick Lane, waiting for the train to go by

First day of filming- Thursday 27th October

We had a tough day of filming because it was raining, this was a minor set back, but we were still determined to keep working. Our time was spent mainly on creating some base tracks and some flash back scenarios. We took this time to do some further planning and practice what shots we might use.

Here are test shots of Thursday's filming:

All of our filming was done in Brick Lane.

Research; Music videos that will help in production

B.O.B- Nothing on you
From this video as a group we would like to adapt the change in faces with the different women.
In the same way that this video uses the different faces to represent a message to different women. We would also like to use the rapid change in faces (without the animated riped effect) to show the different women in our main characters life.

Example - Kickstart

The same way in which there is a change in feet at 0.07secs we would also like to use this edit effect when our characters are trying in different outfits. We where also looking to use the split screen to show different things happening at the same time and to also show the same person in different angles/ shots. This video uses a variety of edit we might think to use in our own.

Nero - Crush on you

In the beginning of the video we see the main character about to kiss a number of different girls. We might use this video and edit as inspiration to show that when are cheaters. The use of this effect will add emphasis to the different women in his life and also represent men as "heart breakers", liars and immoral.

Research; How our video will differ from the original

Example & Skream - You shot yourself in the foot again

When picking the song for our final music video me and my group analysed many different songs. As a group we decieded that we did not want a song that was too slow, but more of a song with a up beat tempo. After short listing genres and artists under each genre,we came across this song through our search and its clicked to our group and we where all attached to the song because of the upbeat chourus.

Above is the original song and music video by Example and beat produced by Skream. Example is a very well known British dubstep artist. The original music video follows a story about a couple in a relationship. The girl friend prepares a meal and present for her boyfriend though she is stood up as he goes clubbing and spends the night with the lads. The video uses a variety of edits in the chorus which go along with the fast beat of the song. The video follows the two different situations between the man and his girlfriend. Men in this video are represented as arogant and they are unrelable and drunkards. Womean are represented as commited, loving, thoughtful.

The way in which our music video will differ is that we will have a different storyline. We would like to show a storyline of a relationship, but we would also like to introduce different shots in a wider variety of locations through out the chorus. One example of how we will do this is we will use a variety of faces to represent a cheating boyfriend. We will use the same shots of different girls in different locations to show and represent the many women in the mans life. We will also use one member of our group as the artist, and will lip sync parts of the song, this is something we do not see in the orginal video. This is a new adjustment to our old video plan.

With our old plan we had presented to one of the media teachers, we had soo many ideas that made is very complicated. Our teacher suggested changing the song, or changing our plan. In the old video we wanted to produce a video that showed and represent men and women as the same arogant and uncaring individual who are also liahs. We where going to film a boy and girl in a relationship but still each on each other and still run back to each other like everything is okay. Creating this video would have been difficult because of the many people we would have had to rely on. I feel that with our new idea, if its done well and effectively we would be able to produce a very good video :)

Update on Music video Ideas

After a discussion with a media teacher last week we came to a decision that we will be changing the narrative of out music video because it was far to complicated to work with. We received advice to make our music video 60% performance where we will show our artist more than we expected to. We are still incorporating our initial ideas of the changing faces at a rapid pace as well as the boy sitting with the girls changing continuously. This just enables us to make our narrative stronger and much more effective. We think this idea is better and easier to work with because we had too much action going on in our music video that would probably confuse the audience and ourselves for a matter of fact! We are planning to go to our original locations such as , Briklane, Mile end and Camden Skate park to do the video shoot of our artist etc...trying to capture the mood of the song aswell as enhancing the genre.

We are heading out to film for the first time on Thursday 27th October 2011.

Research; Skills Audit

What have I learnt?

During AS I had a stuggle to link my research with my practical work. A2 media has taught me what to look for in order to produce successful work. The outcome of my research will reflect on my practical work. I have learnt how to work efficiently with my group to create something we can all be proud off. As aslo taught me that planning also contributes to the outcome of the product, unorganised or planning that is not well thought out could lead to a very amature production of the final product.

I have also learnt;
  • How to use final cut pro with a wider variety of features
  • Linking other programs with Final Cut pro to produce a more successful video
  • Creating base tracks
  • Different camera shorts
  • How to present and pitch my ideas to a group of peers ans teachers

I am very confident about A2 media because of the lessons learnt in As media :)
