Research for music Video; Andrew Godwin's theory

Andrew Goodwin
'Dancing in the Distraction Factory' (1993)

Andrew Goodwin believes that traditional narrative analyses using ideas like Todorov do not apply to pop videos. He also believes that pop videos approach narrative differently from novels and films

 Reasons for the different narrative structures;
  1. Pop videos are built around songs, often the songs do not show the traditional structures ( Normality- Problem- resolution)
  2. In a pop video the artist is used as a character and a narrator
  3. Artist usually looks straight into the camera to involve the viewer with the performance.

Pop Videos rely on repetition, images may be repeated the same way a chorus or a line would be. Repetition in songs of other songs (intertextuality) means that we become familiar with the genre and have expectations for videos of those genres. The video would then be played on TV, radio and might also be used as an advertising tie-in for films of TV making the song familiar through repetition.

Advert: Icelolly.com -- Compare Packages
Music: Hot Chocolate -- You Sexy Thing
The advert above made an effective impact on the audience (me) because many people remember catchy phrases or jingles.

Pop songs and also videos have a form of closure and ending. The single that the video is based on must end this is often reflected in the structure of the music - there is a build to climax or to a constant repetition before it fades away.

Some videos are independent from the music they come from. The visualisation may go beyond the original meaning. Some videos make visual pleasure which makes people what to watch the video again, this then promotes the music. They can sometimes promote other things such as films. There are three types of relations between songs and videos : Illustration, amplification and disjuncture.

Illustration; Video tells the story of the lyric, Dance is often used express to feelings/moods in the song.

Taylor Swift- You belong with me
The song combines narrative and performance, the song is about a girl (Taylor Swift) who feels she belong to a guy who is already taken. The video illustrates how she feels about the guy, but the guy is not aware, the lyrics tell the audience shows her feelings and the video shows her feelings, moods and actions towards this.

Amplification; Videos introduce new meanings that do not contradict with the lyrics but add layers of meaning.

Amy Whinehouse - You know im no good
The lyrics are not actually reflected in the video and the situations are not actually happening to her. They can be seen as metaphorical representations of her life.

Distjuncture: Little connection between the lyric and the video or where the video contradicts the lyric.

The Saturdays - Missing you
As shown in the title the song is meant to be about someone 'missing' someone. In the video we expect to see this. But the video does the opposite and shows the artists in different locations. The artists sing directly at the camera, this directs the song and performance to the audience making them feel involved.

Pop videos often have a recognisable feature(s). One example would be Micheal Jackson's yelp and/ or twirl in his videos.

Another feature would be the way women are represented as objects of males desire, mainly true in heavy metal and hip hop videos.
Below an snapshot from 50cent's video 'Candy shop'- women are wearing bikinis and chocolate is being poored over them connoting that women are things to eat, or 'sweet' in a sense.

Some artists ; Madonna and Beyonce purposely present themselves for males to look at. what is different about their videos is that they look directly into the camera at the viewers and they cease to be passive.

Videos try to appeal to as wide of an audience as possible without leaving out the main target audience. Those with older bands will often show them in their younger days; this would be in the 60's 70's so that the older audience can still recognise them.
Videos that are song written for a particular movie will often incorporate images from the film into thoe video. Celine Dion - My heart will go on from titanic

Research for Music Video: Skills Audit

Thinking back to the research that i conducted for my AS practical work i believe that it helped  me develop my research skills in a number of ways. I am able to use many different programs in order to make me planning and research easier to present for example Wordle and Prezi are very creative sites that allow my work to look much more presentable and fun. I'm a confident user of Final cut pro (Transitions, export, import), Soundtrack pro(creating base tracks, sounds), Livetype( Fonts, adding effects, colours, lettering), Hand break (converting videos into MP4 format, Quicktime and still learning how to become an effective user of Photoshop. Another skill i was able to illustrate was my organisational and presentational skills through blogging and class work. Another important skill that i learnt was using the JVC cameras and also working in a group and sustaining a good bond between one another because you have to work together in order to produce an amazing practical project.

Research for music video: Analysis of Music Video

JaRule- Down a** chick feat Charlie Baltimore
I think this video is the best example of the music video form because of the way everything is put together. The video have a illustive narrative, where the lyrics tell the story in the song.
The video uses Goodwin's theory of trodov where as by the video follows the form of:
  • Normality - 2 central characters; Lovers or Hero/villain
  • Problem- so there is disruption to normality
  • Quest to overcome disruption
  • Return to a changed Normality
The video uses a good variety of locations which do not inturupt or confuse the illustative narrative of the video.

They also have a break from the music video to place acting inbetween this helps keep the viewers informed of the storyline incase they because lost.

The main actor is represented as someone who will rebel to protect her boyfriend/partner. She has red hair which connotes her dangerous side, which is also shown in the video as she survives i nprison against one of the prison bullies.

The video also ticks the boxes from our lesson discussion about what makes a good music video...
  • Attractive bodies
  • Tempo
  • Originality
  • Strong Narrative
  • Image and song should match
  • Choreography
  • Good message
  • Interesting locations
  • Attractive artist
  • Rhythm editing

These are shown throught the music video.

Research for Music Video: The music industry

The music industry has changed hugely in the last 10 years.

Production (The process of marking music and recording it to a sufficient standard so that it can be sold)
Then: Artists used to go to professional studios and technology was much more basic and simple.
Now: Comfort of your on home, computer and your own personal studio in your house. For example Daniel Bedingfield produced his first album from home.

Distribution (How this music gets to people and how they know about it)
Then: Tv, radio and newspapers had various advertisements as well as magazine articles.
Now: Billboards and the use of the Internet has been a massive help in promoting and distributing music. Bluetooth and itunes help transmit songs from one dive to another. File converter is also available.

Exchange (What changed hands between the people who own the music, and it's audience in reward for the chance to listen to it)
Then: Used to buy CD's and records from stores like HMV.
Now: Downloads for free via the internet and piracy.

Research for Music Video: Lyrics for final song choice.

Skream & Example – Shot Yourself In The Foot Again Lyrics
Take a bag with your clothes
And leave your keys by the door
‘coz she never want to see you no more
Never should have listen to the serpent
You shot yourself in the foot again
Take your sad little face
And leave your pride at the door
‘coz she never gonna touch you no more
Never should have listen to the serpent
You shot yourself in the foot again
Face looks jaded
Clothes are faded
keep walking on my friend
Face looks jaded
Clothes are faded
keep walking on my friend
(Where he’s gonna go to)
(Who to say hello to)
(They hate you down the social)
Face looks jaded
Clothes are faded
keep walking on my friend
(Where he’s gonna go to)
(Who to say hello to)
(They hate him in the ol’ school)
Face looks jaded
Clothes are faded
keep walking on my friend
(keep walking on my friend)
(keep walking on my friend)
Take a bag with your clothes
And leave your keys by the door
‘coz she never want to see you no more
Never should have listen to the serpent
You shot yourself in the foot again
Take your sad little face
And leave your pride at the door
‘coz she never gonna touch you no more
Never should have listen to the servant
You shot yourself in the foot again
Face looks jaded
Clothes are faded
keep walking on my friend
Face looks jaded
Clothes are faded
keep walking on my friend
(Where he’s gonna go to)
(Who to say hello to)
(They hate him down the social)
Face looks jaded
Clothes are faded
keep walking on my friend
(Where he’s gonna go to)
(Who to say hello to)
(They hate him in the ol’ school)
Face looks jaded
Clothes are faded
keep walking on my friend
(keep walking on my friend)
(keep walking on my friend)

With the repetition of the lyrics,  we may find that we have to repeat a lot of shots or edits.

Research- Mood board

This is the mood board that i created, i thought that it reflected the type of things we wanted to portray in our music video and for our artist.

(Research) Skream&Example - Shot yourself in the foot

Example

After speaking to our teachers we discovered that not many students produce dubstep videos throughtout the years. As a group we feel that Dubstep is current and slowly becoming popular with young generation.

Ideas we have if producing this video;

  • Edits; Fast edits of cutting between a cross of different people - we discussed maybe having closeups of different parts of their body
  • Lots of shots ( mainly cuts) - This will come in mainly on the choruses.
  • Mise en scene: Cigarettes, alcohol, make up, bedrooms, parks, bus.
  • Representation - Women as aggressive, unconventional, loud, outgoing. Men as polite, generous, understanding
So Far this is our final idea....
We have agreed a lot of hard work and time will be taken to produce this video because we need a lot of shots!

WE ARE EXCITEDDDD! :)

(Research) Shortlist of song choices

 Example
Example is an inspirational artists for us to base our music video around.
EXAMPLE- Shot yourself in the foot again
SKREAM & EXAMPLE- SHOT YOURSELF IN THE FOOT AGAIN
We liked how there were rapid camera shot's/edits once the beat dropped. We had the idea to use this same song with a different  storyline. The fast shots would be a great way to illustrate a fast up beat song.
  • lots of footage would be needed because of the fast shots and quick cut
The two videos below show our alternative choices and in a way relate to the sa,me concept of fast edits and and base track. We also liked the use of the black and white pencil edits in Watch the sun come up video.

EXAMPLE- Watch the sun come up

EXAMPLE- Stay awake

(Research) Digipak

I made a Digipak for the artist Nicki Minaj for a new album called 'I am Barbie'. With the title of the album in mind I focused on making and presenting the pak with relevant colours and pictures. I used pictures from her website, These where selected carefully. I chose two pictures that fit well together with the theme of the digipak (Barbie).

I used Photoshop to design and add text and images to the existing images of the artist. Our teachers had already provided us with a template for the digipak which made the task slightly easier. I not only chose this image because it is eye grabbing, but I also chose this image because of the colour of the background which links in with my theme.

A Barbie is represented as something that is 'girly' mainly associated with colours like; white, pink and purple. They are beautiful, and playful, in society a Barbie is represented as someone who is 'plastic' and fake in terms of their appearance. In my Digipak I went along with these representations by using the same colours and also using an image where the artist looks almost 'unreal' and plastic like.

Nicki Minaj is already own to be someone who calls herself  'Barbie', so the digipak is a representation of her image and her album.

On my digipak I included;
  • Artist name
  • Album title
  • Album song list
  • Record label
  • Bar code
  • Copyright
  • Website for the label
  • I also used 'Parental Advisory' because many of the tracks on the album include swearing and explicit lyrics so I am making parents aware of this.
Doing this task will help me when I am creating a digipak for my own artist. It also helped me develop my Photoshop skills and help me think about the things to consider when taking the pictures for my own digipak.

(Research) Reflecting back on the AS year - Lip Sync

Image showing different cuts.

Image showing timeline.

    • How to cut the music video to the beat.
    • Using different angles for each lip sync.
    • Cutting the video to make it flow.

(Research) Reflecting back on the AS year - Skills Acquired

Here is our first attempt at making a music video for our AS Media.

Skills we acquired:

  • How to use the camera, setting it up, putting it on the tripod.
  • How to use Final Cut Pro for editing.
  • How to use Sound Track Pro for adding sound.
  • How to use LiveType Pro for adding text to our music video if needed.
  • Using Final Cut Pro to edit the music video to the beat so it is in sync.

Research -narrowed down the artist

As my group and i discussed our song choice we had an idea to  shortlist our decisions. We first picked the genre that we were particularly interested in which was hiphop / dubstep. We were then able to distinguish weather or not we wanted to use a male or female solo artist or band. After careful deliberation we chose a solo male singer. Here is our short list:
  • Ed sheeran
  • Proffessor Green
  • Tinie Tempa
  • Example
  • Wretch 32
  • Taio Cruz
  • Plan B
  • Tincy Stryder

Reflecting back on the AS year

Below is the Digipak that my group and I created during the As year.

Evaluative analysis:

Strengths:
  • Clear representation of the artist
  • Shows record company as well as small distinctive logo
  • Clear layout on the front and back of Digipak
Weaknesses:
  • The Digipak is quite plain and not particularly eye-catching
  • Choice of font is not very professional

(Research) Reflecting back on the AS year - Digipak

This is a digipak that we made earlier during the year when we was doing AS Media. The digipak was made for the single "Soul Man".

Strengths:

  • Signs of basic skills to import the photo to make the front cover of the digipak.
  • Effects used for the font.
  • Basic knowledge of what needs to be put onto the digipak.
Weaknesses:

  • Not very eye catching.
  • Not enough effort put into designing it.
  • Logo not very well done.

Research for Music Video: Summary of state of music industry 2012

The guardian was a good source to find out information about the state of music industry 2012. The music industry is a very difficult industry to become noticed because there are so many talented artists that want to be recognised. Music is thriving, but the business is dying. Who can make it pay again?

The size of the music industry has halved and the hope that digital sales would rescue the industry where introduced. Despite all the hype about the digital revolution the music business as represented by the major labels is in serious financial trouble. Many sales went down by 7% n the UK and nearly in the USA which is known as the worlds largest music market in history.

New strategies and promotions alongside advert have been established by many artists to help them appeal to a bigger audience some even go as far as selling special editions that contain, Deluxe additional songs, more features, posters, free giveaways such as tickets or personalised sign copies. This may sometimes make it much more appealable to their an base in hope to gain more sales.

It has been a decade since been piracy and the arrival of itunes. Piracy has become a very big problem in the music industry people are now using fie converters, lime wire and social networking site to download music to their iphones, blackberry's, or Any other music associated device. This reflects the sales because people no longer buy CD's in stores such as HMV. With the invention of iTunes it means people don't have to buy the whole album and can pick and choose songs that they wish to buy.

Radioheads first album was sold via an honesty box approach where people could donate whatever they thought the album was worth, but was priced £6 for an open format MP3 download or £9 for a higher CD Quality WAV format file. This could be a new strategies to game more money especially over the Internet but then again some people are stingy so would probably pay as little as 20p just because it says 'donate'

Many music videos in recent years have been filmed and shot like short mini films a prime example would be Lady Gaga- Telephone which has over 121 million views on Youtube. It lasts about 9minutes and during the music video there is a promotion for virgin mobile. As there are so many views Youtube benefit fro this as it generates revenues through the advertising. There are very explicit imagery's of women and anti social behaviour because of the idea of being looked up in a prison.

Review your favorite previous student video

In class we looked at a couple music videos that were created by previous student's. We then filled out a chart and discussed what made it an effective music video as well as talking about whether or not it follows typical conventions. We were also told that particular year had a slightly different project in which they were not restricted 's.o produce a music video for a British artist or band.
The student video that i liked the most was 'Who's world is this' by Nas. The audience for this type of music genre and video was quite youthful and young, those interested in rap and hiphop style of music. Generally it would be highly associated with young black males but it is also widely listened to be a variety of different people. The genre was also represent through the lyrics or the song as well as what the artist was wearing (Attire) this is important and one of the many important conventions of a music video so that you can portray things exactly how you want to. There is no narrative within the video but it however does illustrate part of the lyrics for example there is a part where it talks about gun crime then the singer does a hand gesture like a gun. This further reinforces the words of the lyrics.
There are great shots, transitions and the more iconic part of the music video was the fish eye lens which made the footage stand out even more. there were also lots of different locations and the lip sync was in time and looked very realistic.
The representation was conventional and there was many young people saying 'this would is yours' reinforcing us as the next generation, there were good representation throughout and generally a very good music video

Research; How the music industry uses social networking sites

 Social networking sites

Myspace- http://www.myspace.com/
Twitter- http://twitter.com/
Youtube- http://www.youtube.com/
Bebo - http://www.bebo.com/

Myspace is one of the few social networking sites that promotes artists (above image is a screen grab of myspace homepage). The homepage promotes a number of artists including 'Marcus Foster', 'Morning Parade' and other artists. Images are a direct link to the artist's videos, songs and personal pages.

Lily Allen is a famous example of artists that used the Myspace site to establish a fan base.

How and Why did Lily Allen use social networking sites to promote her single 'The Fear'?

  •  Lily Allen wasn’t exactly the epitome of a struggling musician before she joined MySpace in 2005 (she already had a lowly £25,000 record deal).
  • 2005 she signed to Regal, an imprint of Parlophone, and, frustrated by the slow pace of the music industry, began to post demos on her MySpace page.

In addition, Lily allen's fan base was used as a form of promotion for her

  • tour dates,
  •  music,
  • merchandise
  • Lyrics
  • Links to other social networking sites (as shown above)
  • Latest video's
  • And personal blog on myspace

Creating Tie-ins between Social networkings sites and our artist:
  • Facebook banner - direct navigation to itunes (Artist downloads)
  • Competitions to win VIP tickets with artist/ band
  • Games linking in with the album (i.e Lily Allen's game 'the fear')
  • MSN messenger -Artists take over the site to promote themselves
  • Paying to have advert before videos played on youtube
  • 'Tweeting' new videos and album download links

Research for music video; Function of a Music Video

Music videos are created to promote an artist or a band, it is a way of making the audience familiar with the artists and their visual representation. Music videos are also used to entertain the audience and to also help the audience remember a song. Good/abstract/unique videos usually get attention...
In the lesson we discussed the qualities that make a good music video and we came up with this list;

  • Repeated central image
  • Attractive bodies
  • Tempo
  • Originality
  • Fast Edits
  • Strong Narrative
  • Image and song should match
  • Choreography
  • Good message
  • Interesting location
  • Attractive artist
  • Rhythm editing

Research for music Video; Copyright clearance

COPY RIGHT CLEARENCE

In the summer break we where given a task to write to a record label to gain copyright clearance for a song that we would be interested in creating a video for in A2. I contacted XL recording to gain Copy right clearance for Adele- Hometown glory. So far the record label have not written back, but I have also taken an interest to other songs and I will contact the record labels as soon a possible.

(Research) Reflecting back on the AS year ; New skills learnt with Lip sync task

During our summer lessons we learnt how use final cut pro to add lip sync to video.
Our 1st task was to create a music video with a pre-made audio and clip.

  • Importing the video clips and audio
  • Learning how to find a mark for both the audio and video clip ( easiest would be the 1st change to the beat, or when the singer's voice comes in)
  • Matching the mark on audio with the mark on all the video clips ; this is usually done one video to avoid complication and locking and silencing the others. Doing this I had to listen out to hear if the sound on the audio matched the sound from the clip, when satisfied I moved on to do the next clip and so on.
  • Once all marks are matched up I had to edit the video this is done by creating another set of marks for when you might like to add transactions form one clip to another (usually done when the beat drops, a faster song would have fast transactions compared to a slow one)
  • After doing so we learnt how to cut the parts of the clip that we did not need
In our Thriller groups we where then set a task to create a music video. We used the same method in creating the lip sync, with my group we used the college computers to project the audio and lyrics for our video because we where not 100% about the lyrics. We filmed 6 different clips, and 4/5 out of them had me lip syncing the song, the rest just had movement. This added to the variety of transactions we had.

Above is a screen grap of my final lip sync video in 'edit mode' on Final cut pro

(Research) Reflecting back on the AS year ; Skills Developed

During the AS year I gained different technical skills, the skills I have gained I have also taken on to A2 and I feel more at confident when completing tasks for my coursework. I feel very confident going into A2 because I feel like I know what appeals to different audiences in terms of edits and effects. I have also learnt the different forms and conventions of a thriller of a certain genre.

  1. Using Final cut pro:  In AS we mainly used Final cut pro to edit our practical videos as we worked our way up to out final thriller;
  •  importing non diegetic sounds into a clip
  • Cutting/ Timing a clip
  • Inputting effect which work well with the image and give the correct connotation to the audience
  • Importing titles
  • Different ways to tell a story by moving round the shots in final cut pro
  • Muting deigetic sounds
2. Using a Camera and camera equipment effectively: The key elements to our coursework, these two pieces where the most essential because they filmed our practicals and thrillers. after learning how to use them it was helpful when we went filming, we didn't have to waste time trying to figure out how to use the camera ;
  • Inserting and changing batteries
  • Fixing focus on the camera
  • Using the camera speaker
  • Changing memory cards
I am excited to take these skills with me onto A2 and produce some fantastic work.

Research for Music Video: Laura Mulvey's ideas

Laura’s mulvey’s theory on representation is ‘In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly’ to my knowledge I would interpret this quote by saying this means that men and women are still unequal within society and that therefore women are perceived as sexual objects. The idea of the ‘fantasy’ may indicate that women become whatever men want them to especially in music videos for instance walking around in a bikini, with a lot of makeup on looking stunning.

Two videos that illustrate my understanding would be:
  • Akon Feat Eminem-Smack That
This music video is an example of how women are represented as sex symbols. This was a good choice to use as the idea of women being used as part of the male gaze is enhanced by the fact that the lightening I very dark and hidden. This reinforces how men may perceive women. Women in this video are dancing around the artists in tiny hot pants and low cut tops revealing alot of their clevage and bums. This shows how women are sometimes degraded as human beings and how men look at them. The music of the song also emphasis the concept 'smack that' a term referred to sexual desire'a and interests in women. As viewers there are lots of close ups and explicit shots.

·         Chipmunk Feat. Mavado - Every Gyal

In this video we directly see what Mulvey was trying to convey through her theory as throughout the video we see girls dancing around in bikini’s some where even topless which really suggest the way women are downgraded within society. Viewers can also see the women handing the artist with his chain and a glass of baileys. This can reinforce the status of women and that they are suppose to act like providers for men. This furthermore indicates the roles of an active male and passive female. There is also a lot of close up of girl’s bodies, particularly their bums and hips this may seem ‘fantasying’ to the male species. A female never speaks in the video neither and it’s as if they know how they are suppose to behave without being told.

There are artists who challenge this and are still able to be very successful musicians without falling into the trap of the 'male gaze' An example would be Adele who is always appropriately dressed in her music videos and breaks the idea of a 'half naked girl in front of the camera'

Missy Elliot is also much more reserved and covered up in her music videos. She seems to be happy with her size and doesn't let it effect how she appeals to the audience. In this video that i will post below also breaks the typical conventions that are usually portrayed not just in music videos but society. The fact that men re supposed to be active while woman remain passive, however in this video Missy Elliot is able to flip it opposite ways, we see her being the much more dominate person in the relationship acted in her music video.
