Mock up of digipak

Front
This was just a rough practice working with photoshop at home. I was a bit bored so i just designed a quick front cover of my digipak. I really like the font here though but the background of the image didn't quite work well.

Making improvements on feedback...

Improvements from pitch feedback

In order to get a clear idea of my final digipak i need to develop my pitch....
Below is a video of me developing my pitch and also images of my final development
I took into consideration the information i was given by my teacher.

Things I changed:
  1. I changed the fonts - made them connect with my genre more
  2. Thought about the use of colour on the spine and limited it down to two colours instead of four
  3. Change of positioning of the texts

Mock-up digipak

This is a mock-up digipak that I have made to get a sense of how I would do it when doing the real thing.
I think that I did a pretty good job on making it, as photoshop can be frustrating to use at times.
I included the basic things which make it a digipak such as;

  • Artist's name.
  • Album name.
  • Spine, including; artist's name, album name, production company, album number.
  • Tracklist.
  • Copyright information.
  • Website for artist and record company.
  • Where to buy the album from.
  • Barcode.
Things I think that I did good:
  • The fonts chosen go well with the genre, being dubstep, I chose the fonts to be like graffiti.
  • Adding the images into it.
  • Sticked to a specific colour scheme.
  • Used a fixed number of fonts.
Things I could have improved on:
  • Have a better background.
  • Include more images.
  • Use the space more efficiently.
  • Make the image of him on the front cover bigger.

Feed back from pitch...

Feedback from pitch of digipak dummy...

Above is the full image of the digipak i pitched to my teacher... He generally like the pitch and my ideas for picking the different elements of the digipak... He mentioned that i used too much colour in the spine of the digipak...
I created my product from the research that i have done on other digipaks from the dubstep genre.

My teacher really like this image and said was a very strong graphic. the only problem with this is that it is an image from the internet so i am going to work with photoshop to create my own dubstep graphic :)

My teacher felt that the font used was tooo general and didnt connote the dubstep genre... I need to look for fonts that link with the graphic and my genre.

The image was good image for the audience to be able to establish who the artist is

The typography above was said to connote the 60s... and i need to change the title to maybe something like 'lost for words' instead of 'lost with words'

I need to think about developing the typography of the text... the text does not connote that the cd is of a dubstep genre

Video of me editing my dummy Digipik

i recorded myself editing. The final product i then pitched to my teacher...
below is the process that i have taken whilst making the digipak...
This video shows a part progress of my editing because i was unable to record the beginning, ENJOY!
p.s. much of this video is of me playing around with photoshop, im still getting familiar with using it :)

Colours & Fonts for Ancillary products-IDEAS!

COLOURS
The colours my group intend to use on our digipaks and advertisements. These also match the outfits of our artist in our music video.

FONTS
I done some brief research on how i wanted the font on my digipak to look. I was going for the theme of it looking 'groovy and old school' having an element of graffiti aspect added to it to show continuous relation from my music video. These are a few fonts that i particularly liked and so my ideas can develop further.

I wasn't able to pitch my ideas to my teachers but while working on my ancillary products i have discussed ideas and changes with them so they could give me feedback on weather or not it looked good or was appropriate for my products. This helped my plan further and try and make my digipak and advert look as good as possible.

Three digipaks-related to my genre

Three magazine advertisements-related to my genre

I found the front cover of a RWD magazine that focuses on the Grime, Hip Hop, Dubstep, House  music. RWD magazine is short for Rewind Magazine the use of this abbreviation suggests that it appeals to young people. Lots of bright colours are used at the front so it is eye-catching the use of white, orange, green, yellow, black, turquoise and pink attracts the audience. The main image is of young people and the designs on there are young and funky which appeals to its target audience.

ideas for digipak

The type of bright colours i could use and the interlinked effect of all the colours which also look like smoke. Lots of people who listen to dubstep usually get 'high' and the the mood of the song can relate to this in some ways.

Party, outgoing images of artist with his mates, the use of alcohol in the womens hands refer back to previous blogs about the conventions of dubstep genres. Dancing, clubing and the music appealing to many different people.

Paint splashes, and colourful writing, the block capital writing also stands out and adds an 'edge' to the theme. The colours are bright and reinforce a 'lively' feel.

Importance and function of digipaks

Digipaks act as an advertisement for the artist as well as attracting audiences and promoting the genre of music
Digipaks advertise the artist by showing what the artist looks like or what the style and music of the artist is like. Different aspects of the artist is shown and information of tour dates and gigs  websites, record labels etc can be found on the advertisement. Digipaks also protay aspects of the artists personality and allow them to be much more creative than  just designing an album. Digipaks can include thank you notes, posters, free giveaways and are much more detailed..

Research-Digipacks were first created by MeadWestvaco, and their product, called Digi-Pak, is trademarked. However, as the format became more popular and began to be used by more manufacturers, the generic "digipack" came to be used to describe all soft CD packaging.

An example:

Digipak mock-up

Idea basis!

Analysis of previous student's digipak

I chose to analyse this student's digipak as it looks very professional and well laid out.
On the front cover is an image of the Artist with his name, album title and parental advisory logo. They chose to stick with a grey colour scheme, although this is basic it is very consistent so it is doesn't look very messy with lots of different colours.
On the spine it has the artist name, album title, record number.
On the back cover, again it has the artist name and album name. It has the tracklist, barcode, copyright information, various logos of companies.
On the inside it has the tracklist again and various information about the album such as; produced by, lyrics written by, musicians, thanks, photos and the artists website.
On the other side of the inside it has where the cd will go.
Also I like the graphic they used where there is a stream of wavy lines going across the covers.

Things I liked:

  • Consistant colour throughout.
  • The image used for the front cover links in to the album name.
  • The design that they used which goes across both inside and outside covers.
  • Only one font used throughout.
Things they could change:
  • I don't think they should have included the tracklist again on the inside.

Exploration of past digipaks

Analysis of Student digipaks

A lot about this Digipak works, but i also think a lot  about it does work...

Positives:
Consistant colour scheme
Strong main image
Nice feminine imagery; cupcakes, lollypops, flowers and butterflys
Nice use of feminine fonts
The way the image in within the butterfly

Things they could improve:
Use of less fonts, the student uses too many different fonts which breaks the overall image of the digipack
The overlay makes the digipak look too busy
Maybe not slant the text
Most of the thinks on the digipak started to look random
The colours used on certain parts of text are too similar to the background making it hard to read the text.

Overall i think this digipack has a very strong point about it. But it also has its downfalls. In all the images and graphics all link together.

Positives:

Things they could improve :

Practising making a Digipak

This is the digipak that I have individually created within a lesson. It is not great, but it is not awful either. There are some decent things that I have included and some things that I can improve on when I am going to make a digipak for our Music Video.

I included the basic things to make it a digipak such as:
  • Having the artists image on the front cover.
  • The artist's name and album title on the front.
  • Artist's name, album title, production company on the spine.
  • A logo for the production company.
  • Track list.
  • Copyright logo.
  • Copyright for the production company.
  • Website of the production company.
Things that I did good:

  • Added a filter to the image on the front cover.
  • Created a logo for the company although it was not the best.
  • Added a barcode.
  • Added the copyright with the company's website.

Things that I could have improved on:

  • Add more colour into it.
  • Choose different fonts.
  • Add a background image to make it stand out.
  • Make a better logo or get a ready made one.

Digipak Self Analysis

Strengths:
  • Display's artists name in large, bold, eye-catching font that directly links to the 'street' theme of the album because of it's hard, solid and blocky style.
  • Shows the name of the album 'Reflections Of A Dealer' while also spelling out the word 'Road' - this style of font is also in keeping with the font used for the artists name, this is a form of continuity.
  • Display's standard features you would expect to see on the reverse of an album cover i.e. Barcode, recording company logo and track-listing.
  • Presents a clear image of the artist.
Weaknesses:
  • Image of artist is far to stretched out
  • Front cover of Digipak is lacking diversity, colour and liveliness
  • Back panel of digipak is also lacking colour and vibrancy
  • There is no spine in between the front and back panel

Digipak Experimenting

Here I have quickly designed a rough Digipak. In order to create this Digipak I incorporated a variety of  different elements that would typically be seen on a standard CD cover, for example; recording label logo, bar code, track-listing, album title, artist name, artist image etc.

Practise Digipack

DAN DIGIPAK

chalk dont match 'dun teaching'
track titles are too small
